About the Commonwealth Secretariat

The Commonwealth Secretariat is the central institution of the Commonwealth, supporting its member countries to work together as equal partners. Established in 1965, it helps turn shared commitments into practical action, guided by the collective decisions of Commonwealth Heads of Government.

The Secretariat provides policy advice, technical assistance and convening support across areas including democracy and governance, economic development, climate resilience and social inclusion. Its work is underpinned by the Commonwealth Charter, which sets out the shared values and principles that unite the Commonwealth, including democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
